The Angels Knew My Name — full-size film preview

This film was inspired by somebody very close to me. As a child she travelled from east to west into a life she was not old enough to choose — a foreign country without language, family or refuge, and experiences no child should have had to endure. I did not want to catalogue that suffering. What mattered was what came afterwards: she survived, rebuilt, protected, loved, and held things together while carrying what others could not necessarily see.

The title gave me a way to say something I found hard to express directly. Being unseen did not make her less valuable. Within Wonders in the Grey, this is one of the clearest reasons I refuse to romanticise hardship. There is nothing beautiful about what happened to a child who should have been protected. The wonder lies elsewhere — in survival, love, rebuilding, and the persistence of a human being through circumstances that should never have been hers to carry.
